Why Wattage Isn't Everything: Peak vs. Nominal Power

When comparing spec sheets, you will often see two different numbers for motor power: "Nominal" and "Peak." Nominal power is what the motor can sustain all day long without overheating (e.g., cruising at 30mph). Peak power is the maximum burst the motor can deliver for short periods, usually during acceleration or climbing a steep hill. A bike might be listed as "3000W Nominal" but "6000W Peak."

For off-road riding, the Peak number is actually the more important metric. When you are at the bottom of a steep rocky hill, you need that instant burst of 6000W to launch you up the incline. A motor with low peak power will stall out on steep grades.
